Robert S. Dombroski, Professor of Italian literature, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at the American Hospital in Paris, from complications following open-heart surgery after a two-month battle with infectious endocarditis.
Robert Dombroski was awarded a BA by Providence College, an MA by the University of California at Berkeley, and a PhD by Harvard University. On completing his undergraduate studies, he was awarded a Fulbright to study at the University of Florence. This first encounter with Italy and its culture had a lasting impact on his academic career, and, throughout his life, he remained close to Tuscany and its intellectual life. Robert Dombroski began his teaching career at the University of Chicago, before moving to the University of Connecticut in 1971, where he taught Italian and Comparative Literature. In 1994 he was appointed Distinguished Professor of Italian at the College of Staten Island and Director of Italian Studies at the Graduate School of the City University of New York.
Robert Dombroski was the foremost expert in Italian Modernism, though his love of literature led him to range widely, from Dante to Beckett and from Manzoni to Kafka. The exceptional quality of his scholarship was recognized internationally. He was as involved in academic life in Italy as he was in America; indeed, earlier this year, his American colleagues had marked their esteem by naming him Honorary President of the American Association of Italian Studies. His critical accomplishments are most apparent in his groundbreaking studies of Pirandello and Gadda, which, like all his writings, are the fruit of a complex vision of literature and of the responsibilities of literary criticism. Robert Dombroski was a "traditional" scholar in the very best sense of the word: he had the highest respect for the artistic integrity and historically determined character of the literary text. He was deeply convinced of the social and political function of literature, and saw it as his duty to highlight the ways in which a work's formal properties translate and record the flux of history. Robert Dombroski's thinking was profoundly influenced by the materialist philosophy of Antonio Gramsci, on whom he wrote a brilliant and insightful essay, as well as by the ideas of Timpanaro and Vattimo. He steadfastly opposed all attempts to detach literature from its social reality, and hence to render it irrelevant. Equally he sought to demystify the realm of letters, by stressing the materiality of literature and the process of writing.
Robert Dombroski's scholarship is distinguished not only by its academic excellence but also by its ethical force--that same deep commitment to moral principles that was the abiding hallmark of his personal and professional life. Robert Dombroski was an inspiring and caring teacher, as well as a supportive and demanding colleague. Above all, he was a uniquely generous and loyal friend. He has left a lasting impression on many, many lives.
Robert Dombroski is survived by his wife, Lucy McNeece, his sons, Ian and Stanley, and his grandchildren, Samuel, Lucas and Robert.
The funeral will be private, but there will be a series of events in both Italy and the United States to commemorate Professor Dombroski in the Fall.

Vagliato alla luce dei metodi che la critica letteraria più recente ha riservato ai fenomeni, per molti versi esemplari, del romanzo inglese e francese coevo, anche il romanzo italiano del secondo Settecento - tradizionalmente trascurato dalla critica e, nel suo insieme, rimasto sinora un oggetto dai contorni vagamente definiti - si scopre un genere ben vivo e prolifico, che annovera molti titoli, più volte ristampati.
A un secolo di distanza dall'unico studio complessivo dedicato a questo tema (apparso ad opera di Giambattista Marchesi nel 1903), il presente volume si propone come una rilettura d'insieme della scrittura romanzesca nell'Italia dei Lumi. L'attenzione posta alle forme della narrazione pseudo-autobiografica e alle figure delle protagoniste femminili (due tratti il cui successo in Italia fu decretato dai maggiori produttori di romanzi del periodo, Pietro Chiari e Antonio Piazza) mette in luce come il romanzo italiano del XVIII secolo, lungi dal rivestire quel ruolo secondario finora attribuitogli, si inscriva invece in una dimensione europea di più ampio respiro, che viene qui finalmente analizzata in tutte le sue valenze. Emerge in particolare il sorprendente grado di modernità dei testi esaminati, che risultano essere in piena sintonia con i caratteri di mobilità e variabilità codificati da Bachtin e ampiamente attuati dagli stessi romanzieri contemporanei.
Come ben mostra il Catalogo delle opere in esso approntato - forte di oltre 130 titoli - il volume disegna una stagione vitale, svela un panorama ricco e articolato e, in definitiva, riscrive un capitolo della nostra storia letteraria finora negletto, esortando in tal modo a riadattare e ripensare le sistemazioni gerarchiche tradizionali.
