Italian as FL in the Smart Television Age"

The aim of this paper is to analyze the potential of the new interactive media and relate on the particular experience of an European Union funded project (Socrates/Lingua: "Italia 2000" 1994/98) on Italian as a FL for intermediate and advanced learners. The project will be presented as a case study, its production and results will be analyzed and conclusions on its effectiveness will be drawn.

Gambler and the Poet"

The autobiographical portrait constructed in Antonio da Ferrara's dispersed poems contrast both with his posthumous reputation and his identity pieced together from the archives. This paper argues for the literary coherence of the twin personae of gambler and poet, against the background of his friendship with Petrarca, his role in Sacchetti's novella, and his impersonation of Dante.

This paper looks at the novels of Marco Lodoli (from Diario di un millennio che fugge to I fiori ) alongside Gianni Vattimo's speculations on postmodernist society. Focusing on notions of community and utopia, it examines the works of the two authors as products and indices of a common cultural condition.

recente."

In maggio, 1993, un numero di intellettuali, critici letterari, e amici si sono incontrati nella Biblioteca Ariostea a Ferrara per discutere gli ultimi interventi critici sull'autore ferrarese. In quell'occasione hanno anche inaugurato il nuovo archivio del '900 completamente dedicato alla letterature locale. L'intensità della critica conferma l'importanza di Bassani fra gli scrittori del Novecento.

Una scena del film Un tè con Mussolini recentemente immesso sul mercato in versione DVD, viene analizzata da un punto di vista linguistico e glottodidattico, confrontando le versioni doppiate (italiana e inglese) con gli adattamenti scritti dei sottotitoli (in italiano, inglese, francese e tedesco).

multimediale come strumento didattico"

Per studenti della lingua italiana, la traduzione multimediale offre una ricca opportunità di esercitare la conoscenza linguistica/culturale. Dalla parola scritta all'immagine al suono, il testo multimediale richiede competenze sociolinguistiche. Per insegnare la traduzione, si affrontano le problematiche dell'intermediazione culturale. Testi presi in considerazione includono la pubblicità, il cinema, e la televisione.

Alessandro Benati (University of Greenwich, UK) "What Grammar?: two

comprehension approaches to grammar instruction in Italian (processing

instruction and consciousness-raising), theoretical, empirical and practical

issues."

In this paper I intend to give a brief account of the theoretical frameworks which underpin the two approaches and briefly examine some of the empirical research carried out to measure the effects of the two approaches to second language acquisition. Finally, the main implications at the pedagogical level will be outlined.

Mark Epstein (Princeton University) "La nuova colonia di Pirandello: utopia tra storia e distruzione."

The purpose of this presentation is to situate Pirandello's "mito," La nuova colonia, in a tradition of utopian writing that starts with Carlo Dossi. The evolution this work undergoes during Pirandello's career, and the interpretation he gives to the preceding tradition will be some of the focal points of the paper.

Simona Wright (College of New Jersey, Trenton) "Scrittura e utopia ne Il

barone rampante di Italo Calvino"

This analysis emphasizes Calvino's reflections on the role of literature in contempoary society. His evolution as an intellectual and a member of the post-War intellighentsia is described in the novel, from his early experiences in the Resistence, to his participation in the Turin literary establishment, to the disillusioned report on the post-War period. Calvino inscribes his observations of reality in a fairy tale setting, achieving the lightness and incisiveness of a masterpiece that encompasses philosophy, history, society, and the serach for poetic fulfillment.

Firenze) "Analizzare le fiabe: leggere Calvino giocando con le carte di

Propp."

Presentation of a Hypercard activity that seeks to bridge language acquisition and literary analysis, featuring folktakes as retold by Calvino. The first part of the talk adresses the activity itslef, its content, objectives. Results of the implementation in fourth semester Italian are discussed in the second part.

This paper proposes to examine the writing of the Renaissance Paduan writer Giulia Bigolina, who has written the only prose romance written by a woman in the 16th century, Urania, still unedited, on the chaste adventures of an educated young woman who travels throughout Italy cross-dressed.

Franca Celli Merlonghi (Spoleto) "L'Amadis e l'Amadigi a confronto."

Nel mettere a confronto l'Amadis di Garcia Rodriguez de Montalvo con l'Amadigi di Bernardo Tasso vengono considerati innanzi tutto i modelli letterari seguiti dai due autori e le tecniche narrative utilizzate nelle due opere; si discutono le innovazioni presenti nell'Amadigi e gli interventi d'autore sia nel romanzo che nel poema; e si analizzano le descrizioni e la presenza del meraviglioso e del mito.

Female Sexuality in Italian Feminist Writing"

In this paper I will examine the manner in which contemporary Italian Feminist writers explore and intertwine notions of female sexuality, humor and food in their literary output. I will focus on the writings of Margherita Giacobino, who developed as a writer in the political and cultural milieu of Turin in the 70s and 80s, when the historic conflicting influences of marxism and liberalism were largely superseded by Vattimo's "Weak Thought."

the Terms of Prisoners' Release: The Complicated Feminism of Liliana

Cavani's Night Porter "

The painting "Farewell to Hamburg" by Otto Dix is prominently placed in early scenes of The Night Porter and its title is profoundly significant. Lucia Atherton, a concentration camp survivor, lucidly chooses to not meet her husband in Hamburg but instead to stay and die - in Vienna with her former Nazi captor, resuming their sadomasochistic relationship. Cavani complicates both history and feminism by refusing to maintain Lucia in the role of passive victim.

Il paper esamina l'ultimo romanzo dello scrittore e antropologo Giulio Angioni, Lo sprofondo, mettendo in evidenza soprattutto la scelta linguistica proposta dall'autore. La scommessa di Angioni è forse quella di contribuire alla creazione di una lingua che abbia la duttilità della lingua letteraria, con tutta la gamma di ambiguità e appronfondimento di cui essa è capace, ma che non perda le potenzialità comunicative e conoscitive garantite dalla lingua realmente parlata.

aspirante sonettiere"

Cento piccoli romanzi fiume, Centuria contiene 100 microtesti che rimandano, per lunghezza e struttura, al corsivo ed al sonetto. Si indagheranno le pecularietà dei 100 microtesti intesi come "centuria di sonetti," analizzando la struttura e dispositio del testo.

la funzione del cibo nei romanzi di Gina Lagorio"

Rifacendomi ad alcuni romanzi della Lagorio mi propongo di dimostrare come immagini di cibo, con i suoi sapori, odori e colori non restano semplici aspetti sella struttura narrativa, ma piuttosto essi servono alla scrittrice per lo sviluppo dei suoi personaggi.

Learner Through Cinema"

This paper on Commedia all'italiana will detail the development and teaching of an Italian cenema course designed for undergraduate students of Italian and students interested in Italian culture and film. The paper will discuss the course learning objectives, syllabus, film selection, coordinated readings, films guides, and method of student assessment. Particular attention will focus on pedagogic techniques to engage students in the learning process. The presentation will include a viewing of selected film clips to illustrate the thematic groupings.

Augusto Mastri (University of Louisville) "Myth, Discovery, and Denial in

Tornatore's Films"

I will first talk about the pedagogical uses of film in the Italian classroom. Then I will concentrate on the identification of a dozen socio-cultural elements of major importance present in two Tornatore films, Cinema Paradiso and Stanno tutti bene. Especially the latter offers a plethora of views of modern Italian society, often alienated from its past and presenting both obvious and subtle negative aspects.

Tarchetti's Fosca presents a masochistic universe of female power in its central figures and recreation of its male protagonist. Deleuze's model of masochism illuminates Fosca: the novel is liberating in its textuality and the voice it gives both Fosca and the rebelliousness of La Scapigliatura.

anestesia nel romanzo Salamandra di Regina di Luanto"

In questa relazione s'intende analizzare le diverse emozioni di Eva Perelli, la protagonista di Salamandra tramite lo studio dei termini usai per descrivere il binomio dictomico "anestesia"/"iperestesia," quali "inerzia," "impotenza," "noia," "insensibilità," e "ripugnanza" da un lato, e "ardore," "fervore," "ebbrezza," "oblio," dall'altro.

Rosamaria La Valva (SUNY-Binghamton) "Malattie del Superuomo"

Nella produzione letteraria di d'Annunzio si avvicendano due tendenze ideologico-narrative di segno opposto: da una parte le sue prose di romanzo vorrebbero essere la moderna celebrazione di un'avventura esistenziale emancipata da ogni restrizione. Dall'altra, i suoi non comuni eroi si ammalano spesso di sofferenze non comuni, di tristezze e di compiacimenti morbosi, di noie, malinconie, e disgusti immedicabili.

of the Seicento: Performance, Translation, Adaptation"

When the vogue for Spanish plays set in among Italian actors, playwrights and audiences of the Seicento, were some of the earliest to be performed, translated and/or adapted. Twenty commedia dell'arte scenari have been traced to Lope's theater, as well as other works refurbished as scripted plays between 1664-1695.

Jonathan White (University of Essex) "Italy in the Cultural Cosmorama."

By interpreting poetic and visual documents of the Venetian late-eighteenth century, this paper considers the fascinating speculative uses of an Enlightenment optic device, the cosmorama or so-called mondo nuovo. As in that former age, we too in our postmodern millennial moment view past and future through a "cultural" cosmorama.

Beginning Teachers of a Second Language Through Best Practices of Mentors

and Veteran Practitioners"

This paper addresses the findings of a study that surveyed 126 beginning teachers of second language to determine their needs with respect to perceptions about their first years of teaching and predicted help areas. In addition the paper provides a practical taxonomy of best practices gleaned from a survey of more than 600 veteran teachers.

Several examples will illustrate the phonetic and morphological patterns followed when English and Italian loanwords become assimilated. Semantic diversions will better explain the interpretative process undergoing the loanword phenomenon. It is hoped that the overview presented will help language teachers to better visualize the differences and similarities among languages from various points of view.

Centering on the themes of memory, testimony and the Shoah, this paper examines the treatment of the case of the "pantera Nera" in two texts (Elena Gianini Belotti's "Stenodattilo primo impiego" and Giuseppe Pederiali's Stella di Piazza Giudia) which analyze Celeste Di Porto's betrayal of fellow Jews in the Roman Ghetto during the years 1943-45.

Si ricostruisce la breve storia della rivista culturale "Il mondo" apparsa a Firenze negli anni della liberazione, tra il 1945 e il 1946, diretta da Alessandro Bonsanti, con la collaborazione stabile di Eugenio Montale e Arturo Loria, ognuno dei quali responsabile di una rubrica. Titolo e stottotitolo della rivista stanno ad indicare la volontà di fornire un prodotto culturale che si aprisse alle istanze del tempo in termini di un completo coinvolgimento politico, da intendersi come una completa apertura.

Gli obiettivi sono di consolidare le strutture linguistiche, l'esercizio della produzione orale al fine di favorire la memorizzazione di vocaboli e strutture linguistiche, e la verifica.

Questo contributo riferisce ad una esperienza didattica condotta presso l'Università di Lecce. Sacristy: The Cornomania Rituals of the Saturday in Albis in Medieval Rome."

On the Saturday in Albis, the entire Roman populace conveyed to the Basilica Laterana, where they welcomed the Pope chanting incantations in Latin and Greek. A sacristan sporting a floral horned crown pranced like a jester between the circles of people; an archpriest mounted a donkey backwards, while three dioceses presented the pope with gifts of symbolic animals. I will show how the Cornomania ceremony contains pagan elements, including ritual sacrifices.

This paper examines Malerba's Le pietre volanti and Consolo's Retablo, in the light of the paintings of Fabrizio Clerici, whose images play a major role in both novels. The relationship between pictures and narrative text is mutual: on the one hand the novels offer a "dynamic" reading of Clerici's most hermetic works, whereas the paintings become an integral part of the fictional text's structure, thus providing possible keys for its interpretation.
