It is with the deepest sorrow that the Department of Italian Studies at the

University of California, Berkeley, announces the death of Professor

Gian-Paolo Biasin, sometime Chair of the Department, on August 23, 1998,

after a long illness. Memorial arrangements are pending. Professor Biasin

is survived by his wife, Rita, and his son Giovanni. His outstanding

achievements as scholar, teacher, and colleague, the warmth and generosity

of his character, and the steadfastness of his friendship, will keep him

alive in the hearts of all who knew him.

Italian: Language Coordinator. Assistant Education Specialist

The Department of French and Italian at the University of

Minnesota has an opening for a 100% Assistant Education

Specialist position for the 1998-1999 academic year.

Qualifications: At minimum, an M.A. degree in Italian language

or linguistics, Foreign Language Education or a related field.

Near-native proficiency in Italian and two years of teaching

experience are required. Candidates with preparation in pedagogy

or second language acquisition will be preferred; expertise in

adapting technology to language instruction highly desirable.

Job Description: The successful candidate will be appointed at

100% time for nine months to supervise and coordinate all

sections of first- and second-year Italian language classes

during the stipulated academic year (approximately 28 sections

total) and to teach six (6) of these over three quarters. Other

responsibilities include syllabus revision and design, test

development, and evaluation of instructors. Salary: $29,000.

Medical insurance is provided (begins October 12, 1998) and

other minor fringe benefits. Appointment Period: September 14,

1998 through June 13, 1999. This position is for the stipulated

academic year only. In Fall of 1998 a search for an annually

renewable position will be conducted, for which the successful

candidate in the present search is encouraged to apply. To

della segnalazione di Francesco Saverio Iatta comparsa su Notizie brevi 46,

si parla del riversamento su cd-rom dei contenuti presenti nei dischetti

della collana "Didascalica" da noi edita. La notizia molto probabilmente è

stata desunta da un articolo apparso su "PC Inter@ctive": questa ipotesi

rientra nei progetti della Casa editrice (il mercato impone infatti che

tutti i prodotti su floppy siano via via sostituiti da versioni su cd-rom)

ma, per quanto ci riguarda, desideriamo segnalare che il catalogo 1999

della D'Anna conterrà ancora le versioni su dischetti delle antologie della

collana in questione. Per il 2000, vedremo...

Caro Speciale,

sempre utili le sue rassegne. Grazie. Contribuiscono a ricordare anche

quanto propriamente destinato al cestino.

Rispetto a quella in oggetto,troppo facile ( sarebbe ) e permaloso

(suonerebbe) rilevare che manca il nome di Sciascia. Se l'immagina che

squillo di tromba per altrettante associazioni di scrittori?!...

Leviamo piuttosto dieci maccariane pernacchiette all'indirizzo dei 13

giocatori del Corsera,anzi facciamo 14 per non lasciare a viso asciutto il

grande Corriere che evidentemente ha vuoti da riempire in estate,non solo

di spazi stampa.

Caro Speciale,

dobbiamo essere grati all'OSSERVATORE ROMANO (giornale cui Sciascia si

rifece per quell' "unicuique suum" dell'incipit di uno dei suoi più bei

racconti) per averci dato la prova del nove sull'anomalia di Sciascia

presso l'intellighenzia italiana,a quasi dieci anni dalla scomparsa del

racalmutese.

In risposta alla hit parade del novecento letterario italiano promossa

dal "Corriere della Sera",Mario Gabriele Giordano,articolista del giornale

vaticano,ha additato il quotidiano milanese per avere interpellato dodici

critici "allineati a sinistra" ,proponendo un elenco di dieci

"contro-magnifici"

Ci conforta la assenza del nome di Sciascia da entrambe le liste: riprova

luminosa della sua estraneità alle parrocchie passate e presenti

("Leonardo, un uomo di altri tempi, speriamo futuri" lo aveva così salutato

Marco Pannella )

Alla perdurante non notiziabilità stampa di Leonardo Sciascia sulle sue

contestate prese di posizione in campo politico (caso D'Urso,Affaire

Moro,Affaire Tortora) fa pendant adesso la omologante negazione di

esistenza dello scrittore nel campo suo proprio,quello letterario.

Dalla finisterre pirandelliana dove oramai giace Leonardo Sciascia con

venticinque lettori e qualche buon compagno di divagazioni (Pier Paolo

Pasolini,Alberto Savinio,Giacomo de Benedetti,Fabrizio Clerici) ,giungano a

critici e quotidiani ulivistico-clericali venti magnifiche pernacchiette.

Attendiamo la prossima sfilata di eccellenti.

"Il Novecento non e' ancora finito"

Il vecchio gioco della mongolfiera -- o dell'isola deserta, altra variante

-- che ha posto solo per dieci scrittori in tutto il Novecento italiano e'

senz'altro prematuro. Non e' ancora il tempo dei giudizi critici e del

distacco e cio' e' un bene: non si puo' e non e' giusto razionalizzare

tutto. Ben vengano le prese di posizione provocatorie, le difese dei

maestri, delle letture particolarmente significative, degli esempi e degli

amici. Sono tutti segni di profonda umanita' di fronte ai quali l'obbligo

della scelta si riduce, penso io, a pura malizia.

E' il caso di sospendere i giudizi e di coltivare il proprio orticello

aspettando il vaglio della storia: un grazie alla saggezza contestataria

di Vassalli per averlo ricordato. Del resto, non vedo perche' dover

scegliere cosa salvare del Novecento italiano finche' ci siamo ancora

dentro sino al collo. Non sara' il semplice computo del millennio a

toglierci, in Italia, dal secolo di Pirandello, Svevo, Montale, Calvino e

chissa' quanti altri; conviene leggerli tutti, sono ancora nostri

contemporanei.

Ho invece un'altra domanda (interessata, naturalmente): quali scrittori

abbastanza recenti puo' proporre l'Italia ad un lettore di formazione non

italiana o quantomeno non solo italiana? Calvino s'e' imposto da se' per

la sua cultura e il suo respiro internazionale, ma e' difficile -- ad

esempio -- difendere Pavese di fronte a chi e' abituato a Faulkner, o far

capire con chiarezza la distanza tra Montale e Eliot.

Se e' vero che la "Cambridge History of Italian Literature" e' in grado di

diffondere le nostre lettere in ogni angolo del mondo, notava recensendola

Vittore Branca, e' altrettanto vero che cio' le costringe a misurarsi con

culture diverse e problemi ben piu' ampi e sfaccettati di quelli di casa

nostra. Quali sono i nostri scrittori di oggi all'altezza del compito?

Hi Emilio, since it's vacation annd time doesn't press, I'm dropping you a note with a thought and question. It strikes me that almost all the news you disseminate involves the 800 and 900. Is it, do you think, because that is what almost all the news IS, or might this reflect your own inclinations toward the modern period? For someone like me with interests more in medieval and Renaissance studies, pickings are slim on your electronic service. Of course, now there is a lot on Leopardi for obvious reasons, but even aside from that, I feel there is a real disequilibrium between the earlier periods and the later ones in the information we receive. Has anyone else commented on this? Of course, I continue to admire your initiative. By now it has become a standard channel of information in our profession, so my feelings over all are certainly positive, but I was just wondering about how things get weighted as they do ... mi permetto di rispondere pubblicamente alla tua lettera per cercare di suscitare un dibattito o qualche reazione da parte dei nostri colleghi e delle nostre colleghe di Lettere Italiane. Hai perfettamente ragione che il Novecento (e per ragioni contingenti anche Leopardi) e’ l’argomento principale di molta informazione che passa attraverso LI. E mi dispiace tanto del fatto che non posso spedire informazioni che riguardano gli altri secoli. Non sono particolarmente interessato al nostro secolo: come sai mi interesso molto di Rinascimento e Barocco (e Leopardi). Ma la maggior parte di notizie che trovo sulla letteratura italiana sia su Internet sia sui giornali riguarda il Novecento. Questo e’ inevitabile: i media hanno come utenti perone comuni alle quali pochissimo interessano Tasso o Tesauro o Cavalcanti o Beccaria. Per me e’ difficile reperire informazioni che riguardano ad esempio questi autori. Raramente si trovano articoli su argomenti della letteratura del passato. Cosa fare? Io proporro’ qualcosa nell’autunno. Intanto gli specialisti della letteratura classica italiana iscritti a LI, e sono tantissimi, potrebbero mandarmi materiali di discussione, informazioni, saggi, recensioni, ecc. in modo tale da discutere anche di Tasso e Tesauro e Cavalcanti e Beccaria. Cioe’ Lettere Italiane attraverso il medium della posta elettronica potrebbe (dovrebbe) diventare una specie di giornale, gazzetta degli studi di italianistica dal Duecento al Novecento. Non proprio una rivista, ma almeno una specie di Corriere o di Espresso, dove far circolare idee ed informazioni. Sara’ possibile? A tutti voi la parola.

dell'Associazione Amici di Leonardo Sciascia, all'indirizzo

http://www.amicisciascia.it. Sotto il coordinamento del segretario

dell'Associazione, Francesco Izzo, il nuovo provider, Prometheus, ha

messo in rete una nuova architettura del sito, ricca di interessanti

contenuti. Una breve descrizione è leggibile nel file annesso.

Una novità riguarda in particolare i soci sostenitori, il cui

accesso on-line ai testi pubblicati richiede da oggi una procedura di

downloading: la parola-chiave necessaria sarà loro comunicata quanto

prima.

Un sito, ed in particolare un sito di un'associazione, vive

soprattutto come strumento di comunicazione fra i soci e gli

interessati, che possono tutti contribuire a migliorarlo. Resto
