E' nata una nuova Fondazione che ha per scopo lo studio della poesia italiana del Rinascimento, dall'eta' del Petrarca a quella del Chiabrera. All'origine dell'iniziativa la generosita' e l'intelligenza di Jean-Paul Barbier-Mueller e della sua consorte che hanno voluto rendere accessibile agli studiosi la loro ricca collezione di libri antichi, incunaboli e cinquecentine. Il fondo appare di straordinaria coerenza tematica, e comprende grandi autori come l'Ariosto e il Bembo, ma include altresi' un gran numero di poeti minori e di testi rari, dunque piu' che mai preziosi sul piano della ricerca storico-letteraria. Sono presenti nella raccolta, con molte prime stampe e in magnifici esemplari, anche autori come Vittoria Colonna e il Sannazaro, Gaspara Stampa e il Chiabrera, o altri che attendono migliore udienza. La nuova fondazione e' stata dotata di un capitale di un milione di franchi, ed una convenzione di durata illimitata la lega all'universita' di Ginevra. Infatti i libri saranno collocati presso la Facolta' di Lettere di quell'ateneo in una saletta riservata della Biblioteca d'italiano: in armadi naturalmente blindati ma ben accassibili, su richiesta, agli studiosi. Alla collezione di volumi antichi si affianca un lascito cospicuo di opere enciclopediche o di natura bibliografica e critica dal Settecento ai nostri giorni, donate contestualmente al fondo principale. La fondazione, che verra' presieduta dal professor GUGLIELMO GORNI, intende pubblicare anche una rivista di carattre scientifico intitolata ITALIQUE, che avra' scadenza annuale e sara' distribuita dall'editore Droz di Ginevra, presso il quale ci si puo' abbonare. Ogni anno la fondazione intende assegnare una o due borse di studio a giovani ricercatori e organizzera' inoltre una conferenza su un tema umanistico o rinascimentale che sara' tenuta da uno studioso di chiara fama.

Assistant (tenure-track) or Associate or Full (tenured) Professor of Italian and Comparative Literature, with a specialization in a period or periods of Italian literature and culture of the 18th thugh the early 20th centuries, and comparable expertise in at least one other language and literature (including English). Special areas of interest might include: Romanticism, nationalism, the novel, gender studies, critical/cultural theory, and film. Position entails teaching on both undergraduate and graduate levels in both departments. Candidates should possess the Ph.D. (or equivalent) and have outstanding potential or achievement in both research and teahing. LEWIS TURCO WINS THE 1997 BORDIGHERA $2,000 BI-LINGUAL POETRY BOOK PRIZE WITH JOSEPH ALESSIA AS HIS TRANSLATOR Daniela Gioseffi, Poet/Founder of the Prize

We are pleased to announce the winner of the First Annual Bordighera Bi-lingual Poetry Prize, sponsored by the Sonia Raiziss-Giop Charitable Foundation, for 1997. Felix Stefanile, who served as Distinguished Judge, chose the winning manuscript, A Book of Fears, from several finalists which were submitted to him anonymously. The winner is Lewis Turco of Dresden, Maine, and the translator is Joseph Alessia -- born in Altamonte, Italy, -- of Oswego, New York.

Lewis Turco is a writer who has devoted most of his life to the craft of writing and scholarship of poetry. His book of verse forms is known to almost all American poets; it has been on the shelves of most serious poets for many years. Born in Buffalo, New York, in 1934, Lewis Putnam Turco received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Connecticut in 1959, and went on to earn the degree of Master of Arts from the University of Iowa in 1962. He served as Instructor of English and founding Director of the Cleveland State University Poetry Center from 1960 to 1964 and, later, as an Assistant Professor at Hillsdale College from 1964 to 1965. From 1965 until 1996, he was a professor and founding director of the Program in Writing Arts at the State University of New York at Oswego. He is currently Professor Emeritus at SUNY, Oswego.Turco now lives with his wife in Dresden, Maine, and he can look back over his many accomplished books including the forthcoming Shaking the Family Tree, a book of prose memoirs; The Book of Forms: A Handbook of Poetics, 1968, and The New Book of Forms, 1986; Visions and Revisions of American Poetry, 1986, which won the Melville Cane Award of the Academy of American Poets; The Fog: A Chamber Opera in One Act, with the Dutch composer Walter Hekster, 1987; The Shifting Web: New and Selected Poems, 1989; Dialogue: A Socratic Dialogue on the Art of Writing Dialogue in Fiction, 1989, translated by Sylvia Biasi and published in Italy as Il Dialogo in 1992, The Public Poet, Five Lectures on the Art and Craft of Poetry, 1991, and Emily Dickinson, Woman of Letters, 1993. Lewis Turco's most recent publication is Bordello: A Portfolio of Poemprints, with George O'Connell, 1996.

The winning translator of A Book of Fears by Lewis Turco is Joseph Alessia; born in Altamonte, Italy in 1938. He holds a Master of Arts from De Paul University, 1970; and a Ph.D. from Indiana University, 1970. He has been a professor at Collegio San Leone Magno (Italy), 1958-63 and a faculty member of the University of Colorado, 1970; Indiana University, 1968-70; Ohio State University, 1970-74. He met Lewis Turco while serving as a professor at SUNY Oswego where they were colleagues on the faculty since 1974. Joseph Allessia is author of Approfoncliamo l'Italiano, 1977; The Poetry of Dino Frescobaldi, 1983. He resides in Oswego New York.

Lewis Turco and his translator, Joseph Alessia, divide the two thousand dollar cash award evenly between them. A Book fo Fears will be published in 1998 by Bordighera, Inc., as first in an ongoing series sponsored by the Sonia Raiziss-Giop Foundation for Poetry, particularly Italian poetry. The prize was established to foster a preservation of the Italian language among Italian American poets, and, to reward the best manuscript in English by an Italian American poet each year, as well as insure its publication. The new deadline for 1998 competition will be at the end of May, 1998. GUIDELINES FOR THE 1998 PRIZE:

The Bordighera Poetry Prize Sponsored by The Sonia Raiziss-Giop Charitable Foundation Offering Book Publication and $2,000

* The prize, consisting of book publication in bilingual edition by Bordighera, Inc., publisher of Voices in Italian Americana and VIA Folios, is dedicated to finding the best manuscripts of Italian American poetry in English, accompanied by quality translations into modern Italian, for the benefit of the Italian American community and the preservation of the Italian language. Each winning manuscript will be awarded a cash prize of $2,000 to be evenly divided between poet and translator.

*The poet must be a U.S. Citizen, but the translator may be an Italian native speaker, not necessarily a U.S. citizen. The poet may translate his/her own work if bilingually qualified.

*The poet and translator must submit TWO COPIES of 10 sample pages of poetry in English on any theme accompanied by translations into Italian from the original American English poetry. The final book manuscript length should not exceed 96 pages including the translations. The entire winning manuscript will not be due for at least 6 months after selection of the winner based on the sample pages. This will give the translator time to complete the work.

*Submit 10 sample pages of poems in English--with EACH page of poetry followed by a page of its Italian translation--making a manuscript of 20 pages in all, IN DUPLICATE, on white 81/2 by 11 standard paper, clearly typed and photocopied. (Single-spaced except between stanzas with no more than one poem to a page, though a poem may run on to more than one page.) Be sure to label all pages with titles of poems and number them from 1 to 10. The translations should also be numbered from 1 to 10 with numbers corresponding to their English equivalents. The applicant and translator's names should NOT appear on any pages. Instead, staple the pages securely together and attach two title-pages with a list, or table of contents, of the poems, to each duplicate copy. The cover page should contain the name, address, telephone, e-mail if applicable, and brief biographical note of the author and translator. The next title page should contain ONLY a table of contents of the poems and be ANONYMOUS, as should be the remainder of the manuscript. Poems contained in the submission may have appeared in literary magazines, journals, anthologies or chapbooks. Include an acknowledgments page if applicable. Manuscripts will be judged anonymously.

*Applicants should retain copies of their submission which will not be returned. Submissions must be postmarked by May 30th 1998. Mail, with business size-SASE for notification, to: Daniela Gioseffi & Alfredo de Palchi, Contest Coordinators P.O. Box 15 Andover, NJ 07821-0015.

*The distinguished judge for the second annual award will be FELIX STEFANILE, recent winner of the "John Ciardi Lifetime Achievement Award".

* Include a self-addressed stamped business-size envelope for notification of the winners. For acknowledgment of receipt, send a self-addressed postcard. *The decision of the judges will be final. Winners will be announced by November, 1998. Bordighera, Inc. and the judges reserve the right not to award a prize within a given year if no manuscripts are found to be eligible for publication.

*The author and translator will share in the royalties in the usual amount of a standard book contract to be drawn between Bordighera, Inc. and the winning author and translator.
