Grazie. Chris Kleinhenz The classic email message (like this one) is just plain old text. It can't do anything but be read, or sent, or whatever: it is acted upon rather than acting, a noun rather than a verb. A computer virus is a (special type of) program. If you allow it to get control of the CPU, it can do pretty much what it wants. But programs are written in programming languages, not English (or Italian, or French) like your standard email message. Also, the standard email message is simply displayed on the screen. It never gets control of the CPU, and thus remains inert. This is why it is impossible to contract a viral infection (or have a virus format your hard disk, or whatever) simply by reading an email message. It is also why messages alleging that the there are email messages going around named "Good Times" or "Pen Pal" or whatever which are viruses is patent nonsense. These things surface about every six months and drive us technical types to distraction: just when we finish convincing people that the "Good Times" virus is a hoax, along comes another equally lame hoax and we have to start all over again. I don't mean to imply that it is impossible for viruses to spread via email, but it is perfectly safe to READ an email message in Eudora or GroupWise or whatever, and as long as READ is all you do you are fine. Most modern email systems, such as GroupWise or Eudora, allow you to attach files to email messages. This is a wonderful convenience, but carries a danger as well: you can use this feature to send program files to people, and if a program file is infected when you send it, the infection will go with it. Of course, in order to actually get infected the recipient must first save the program file to the hard disk, and then execute it. Simply reading the email message will not do it. There is no such thing as an email virus. Viruses can be spread by email, but not by the message per se, and it requires extra effort on the part of the recipient to actually get infected. Persone interessate a presentare qualcosa su Dante dovrebbero spedirmi un piccolo "abstract" di 100-200 parole entro il 15 novembre. Grazie! Opinione personale: chi possiede Office 97 (ital.) o Winword 97 (ital.) paga un prezzo non certo popolare praticamente per i soli Ipse dixit + Impariamo l'italiano (questo costa da solo 99000 lire, IVA inclusa, libro + CD).
