The University of Auckland is New Zealand's largest university and has been offering courses in Italian since 1948. The Department of Italian has an academic staff of seven who teach Italian language, literature, film and cultural studies for BA, MA and PhD, and whose research interests include Renaissance drama, verismo, women writers, literature and politics, poststructuralist theory, multi-media language teaching, and contemporary fiction and film. It is one of the larger Italian departments in the southern hemisphere. The Department has strong links with the Programme in Comparative Literature and the Centre for Film, Television and Media Studies.

The University now seeks a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (depending on qualifications and experience) to teach Italian language, literature and/or linguistics.

All candidates are asked to state at which level they seek appointment. In particular, those who do not wish to be considered for a Lectureship are asked to clearly state this in their application.

Conditions of Appointment

Qualifications

1. Applicants should hold a doctorate and have a strong record of published research and successful teaching. Candidates with research interests in any field will be considered, but applications from scholars in Dante and medieval studies, nineteenth- and twentieth-century poetry, or linguistics will be especially welcome. Duties

2. The person appointed will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor through the Head of Department of Italian, the Director of the School of European Languages and Literatures and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts for such teaching, research and related duties including examining as may be required by the Head of Department. The successful applicant will be required to pursue research and to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

A person appointed at Senior Lecturer level should be willing to become Head of the Department at some future date. Salary

3. Commencing salary will be determined in accordance with qualifications and experience within the scales for Lecturers/Senior Lecturers. The present full-time salary scale for a Lecturer is $44,250 per annum rising to $NZ53,250 per annum by six annual increments. The scale for a Senior Lecturer is $NZ56,500 per annum rising to, $NZ65,250 per annum by four annual increments, although this may be extended to $NZ71,250 under exceptional circumstances.

Taking up Duties

4. The persons appointed will be expected to take up duties on 1 July 1997, or as soon as possible thereafter. General Conditions

A SENIOR TUTORSHIP IN ITALIAN

(Limited Term - 3 Years)

The University of Auckland is New Zealand's largest university and has been offering courses in Italian since 1948. The Department of Italian has an academic staff of seven who teach Italian language, literature, film and cultural studies for BA, MA and PhD, and whose research interests include Renaissance drama, verismo, women writers, literature and politics, poststructuralist theory, multi-media language teaching, and contemporary fiction and film. It is one of the larger Italian departments in the southern hemisphere. The teaching of Italian language at all levels from beginners to masters is seen as a core function of the department. A communicative methodology is employed throughout and increasing use is being made of the multi-media computer laboratory with programmes developed in the department.

Conditions of Appointment

The Appointment

1. The appointment is available for a fixed term of three years from the date of taking up duties.

Qualifications

2. Applicants are expected to have at least an MA, native, or near-native, competence in Italian, and experience and training in language teaching. The tutor may be asked to contribute to language-teaching at all levels.

The present salary scale for a Senior Tutor is $NZ44,250 per annum rising to $NZ48,750 per annum by three annual increments. In normal circumstances a Senior Tutor whose services have proved satisfactory may apply for promotion over the bar in the scale, salary maximum $NZ53,250 per annum.
