Libro su cinema e fascismo

[14-5-1996]

Prof. Speciale,

Jackie

Il messaggio:

It has been pointed out to us that the deadlines for the proposed anthology on Italian cinema during the Fascist period posted on Lettere Italiane last week are slightly unrealistic given all of our time constraints. We have thus extended them.

New deadlines:

Abstracts: August 30, 1996

Papers: December 31, 1996

Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Contributions wanted for a critical anthology on Italian cinema during the Fascist period

While traditional interpretations of Italian Fascism had considered it a monolithic, totalitarian regime which succeeded in dictating all rules of social and cultural conduct from above, new research concentrates instead on the contradictions inherent in both Fascist ideology itself and its applications. A significant area in which these contradictions manifested themselves was in the cinematic industry, which flourished under Fascist intervention. In many instance, gaps occurred in the filmmaking process in which subtle opposition to the dominant ideology could emerge.

This anthology will focus on the cinematic space in which conflicts and contradictions in the regime's attempts at self- fashioning and subjectivity construction reveal themselves. Possible topics include: cross-cultural interactions between Hollywood and Cinecitta'; the role of LUCE documentaries; critical examinations of specific genres which flourished during the era; the role of intellectuals and the cinema; Fascist gender constructs and their subversion; film theory and Fascism; the extra-cinematic discourse; and the problematic relationship between Fascism and neorealism.

For consideration in this volume, please send an abstract of 250 - 300 words and/or a completed essay (of a maximum length of 35 pages, including notes and works cited) to:
