CALL FOR PAPERS
for a volume tentatively entitled

Alba de Cèspedes: Lettrice/Letture

Luminous for her contribution to the production and development of women's voices in contemporary Italian culture and letters, Alba de Cèspedes's oeuvre, including prose fiction, poetry, theater, essays, and radio broadcasts, has been neglected by scholarly inquiry far too long. This study, a collection of interdisciplinary essays, seeks to redress this lacuna and to locate de Cespedes within cultural and political debates of the period dating roughly from 1935 (date of publication of her first two works in prose, L'anima degli altri and Io, suo padre. Romanzo sportivo) to 1970 (a year following her last novel, La bambolona).

Papers that complicate traditional historical or cultural assumptions regarding De Cèspedes's work are of interest, as are papers exploring how De Cèspedes might be defined or redefined to engage such issues as the development of the feminist novel in Italy, de Cèspedes's theatrical production, her effect on mass media, development of her material for TV and film, novella and feuilleton production, non-Italian works, ties to French and/or Cuban politics, contextualization within Italian feminist/female writers, and so on. Contributors may examine a variety of genres and an international context.
